How do innovative robotic systems make the leap from the research lab to safe, everyday clinical practice? At the most recent tfz Medical Cluster Insights event, the Central Swiss medtech community gathered at SteelcoBelimed’s Innovation Lab to explore the future of medical robotics. Two high-profile presentations shed light on the topic from completely different yet crucial perspectives: from practical hospital sterilization to wireless microrobots for cell-based therapies.

Medical robots are transforming the healthcare sector at a rapid pace. Yet the path from a brilliant idea to successful application on patients is fraught with challenges and highly complex. It quickly became clear from the presentations by Annette Kutscher (Intuitive / Genesis I&A) and Prof. Dr. Salvador Pané i Vidal (ETH Zurich) that a successful market launch requires far more than just functioning algorithms and hardware.

Practice on the Hospital Front Lines: Considering Reprocessing from the Very Beginning

Annette Kutscher, a reprocessing specialist at Intuitive and a Genesis I&A Consultant with over 18 years of experience with the well-known Da Vinci surgical systems, opened the event with a clear look at clinical reality.

Her key message: Even the most innovative surgical robot is of no use if it cannot be reprocessed safely, efficiently, and reliably within the hospital setting.

  • Regulatory hurdles: Requirements for cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization must be taken into account as early as the very first phase of development for a robotic medical device.
  • Process reliability in the hospital: A hospital must be able to prepare complex joints, cavities, and materials quickly and without compromising quality for the next use.
  • Seamless integration: Neglecting reprocessing requirements during product development not only risks delays in regulatory approval but ultimately jeopardizes patient safety.

Innovation from Cutting-Edge Research: When Microrobots Operate Inside the Body

Next, Prof. Dr. Salvador Pané i Vidal (co-director of the Multi-Scale Robotics Lab at ETH Zurich) took the participants on a fascinating journey into the microcosm of robotics. His research focuses on tiny, wireless microrobots that can be precisely navigated through the human body using magnetic fields.

In his keynote address, he highlighted the latest breakthroughs and remaining challenges on the path from the lab bench to the operating room:

  • Materials of the Future: A key breakthrough is gelatin-based, thermoresponsive polymer capsules. These biodegradable (FDA-compliant) structures dissolve in a time- and temperature-controlled manner and release active ingredients precisely at the target site.
  • Precise Control & Imaging: Through the use of magnetic components (such as zinc-substituted iron oxide nanoparticles), the robots can not only be controlled with exceptional precision but also utilized for magnetothermal heating. Thanks to tantalum nanoparticles, they also remain visible at all times on X-ray images (fluoroscopy).
  • Stem Cell Therapy via Magnetism: Prof. Pané devoted particular attention to magnetoelectric composites. Initial studies—including those on spinal cord injuries—have shown that targeted stimulation can induce stem cells to differentiate, opening up entirely new possibilities for regenerative therapies.

Thanks to the Host

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to SteelcoBelimed AG for hosting the Technology Forum Zug at its inspiring Innovation Lab. The standing lunch that followed provided the perfect setting for in-depth technical discussions among industry experts, researchers, and the speakers.

The event demonstrated once again that Central Switzerland remains a vibrant breeding ground for medtech innovations, where technological visions meet uncompromising Swiss quality and practical relevance.
