«Vitalität, Wettbewerbsfähigkeit und Innovation am Wirtschaftsstandort Zug»
A society with a below-average birth rate and no immigration is ageing rapidly and is increasingly going round in circles. Competition for new ideas is dwindling. Stagnation, a declining rate of renewal and ultimately a loss of vitality and prosperity follow.
The same applies to business locations: building cranes and an increased rate of start-ups are signs of vitality, competitiveness and innovation. They are the basis for a healthy, renewing and vibrant economy. These elements can rightly be described as the framework conditions for a successful business location, which should be at the centre of a successful public location policy. It is precisely this type of location policy that has characterised the Canton of Zug for decades. It invests purposefully and actively in framework conditions such as the transport system, training and cluster platforms and adopts a solution-orientated approach to all stakeholder groups. This is a form of political sustainability, coupled with a high level of reliability and commitment for the economy.
One example of this is the fact that the Canton of Zug enabled a new type of AN Institute ‘Blockchain’ at the University of Lucerne last year and also supports research at this university under the umbrella of the Blockchain Joint Research Hub, supplemented by the activities of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Central Switzerland (HSLU).
The canton of Zug is one of the most sought-after locations in Switzerland for start-ups. It is characterised by excellent economic development and offers an optimal environment. In recent years, a large ecosystem of start-ups has formed. Renowned entrepreneurs from the fields of ICT, life sciences, wholesale and fintech have settled in Zug. Crypto Valley, for example, was founded by start-ups from the fintech sector. In the heart of Switzerland, these pioneers have succeeded in creating a Mecca for experts in blockchain technology.
This latest sector is symptomatic of the effect of cluster formation. A vital cluster in which innovative people from the same industry/technology come together is increasingly a guarantee of success. Success in turn exerts a strong attraction on similar companies and even competitors. Long-standing clusters also have this characteristic. It is up to all of us to remain active so that these clusters can continue to act as a fountain of youth for innovation. It is precisely at this interface that the Technology Forum Zug plays an important role.
